Municipal House

17 la maison de la municipale poi petit

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Prague, Back to Praguer roots

On an aesthetic level, there’s little room for complaints when seeing this gorgeous masterpiece. It stands on what used to be the former imperial palace, home to Bohemian sovereigns for over a century, and to which only the Powder Tower is left of it. Here, the Municipal House immerses visitors into a parallel artistic universe. Built in the 1900s during the Czech National Revival, you can still feel the spirit from that era. The exterior façade, unlike anything else in Prague, immediately sets the tone. This is why the Viennese Secession style is so incredible. Also known as the Austrian equivalent of Art Nouveau, it expresses itself through floral motifs and abundant geometric curves. If each form is perfectly crafted, it’s thanks to its idyllic combinaison of iron and glass, enhanced by mosaics and a colourful stained-glass entrance. It’s the kind of place where a single glance is never enough, because there’s always more to discover. Even though you must pay to access the concert hall, you can still see the interior for free, for it is just as breathtaking. The fancy furniture in its cafés and restaurants was designed by renowned artists, such as the legendary painter and illustrator Alphonse Mucha. You’ll see, your eye for detail will be tested! And don’t forget the basement! You’re probably thinking it’ll be awful, but trust me, it’s worth it. Other than its elegance, the Municipal House witnessed two defining moments in Czech history. From its balcony, leaders proclaimed Czechoslovakia’s independence in 1918. And later on again, when democracy was reinserted in 1989 after 40 years of communist rule. From now on, when you hear “Municipal House of Prague”, you’ll undoubtedly think of grandeur, prestige, history, and extraordinary artistic quality.
