The Strahov Monastery

16 monastere de strahov prague 1 poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Prague, A baroque city full of history

The Strahov Monastery has stood on this small square since 1140. It was founded by the Premonstratensians, a Catholic order of canons established over 900 years ago. In Czech, “Strahov” comes from the word strážit, meaning to guard. A fitting name, as the monastery once stood along the old trade route connecting Prague to the Germanic lands, watching over travellers and merchants. Originally built in Romanesque style, then transformed into Gothic after being ravaged by fire in 1258, the monastery underwent a major Baroque restoration in the 17th century. This transformation gave it much of the appearance we see today, with its iconic towers shaping the Prague skyline. The inside is only open during hours of worship. Called the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the interior is adorned with frescoes depicting the life of Saint Norbert, the founder of the Premonstratensian order. His relics are also preserved here. And as if the tributes weren’t enough, a local beer brewed within the monastery’s grounds since the Middle Ages bears his name. Maybe you’ll get the chance to try it out! The highlight of the visit is, of course, the monastery’s famous library, over 800 years old and divided into two grand halls: the Baroque Theological Hall and the Classical Philosophical Hall, both connected by a stunning Cabinet of Curiosities. In total, half a million volumes—including 3,000 manuscripts and 1,500 books predating the 16th century—are carefully stored on its wooden shelves. And there is a magnificent fresco on the ceiling, illustrating humanity’s eternal quest for knowledge. In short, the Strahov Monastery will take you from one marvel to the next.
