The National Theatre

This emblem of national revival, known as “The Golden Chapel,” is hard to miss. Built in a neo-Renaissance style with a golden roof, this charming building is the official stage of the Czech Republic. Its story begins in 1881, from a collective ambition to create a major cultural venue, as was common across Europe. Filled with hope, people all across the country launched a national fundraising campaign. Generous donors—including the emperor himself—made huge contributions. The grand opening in 1881 was a success, but tragedy soon struck when a devastating fire wrecked the site. The nation mobilised a second time, and in less than 47 days, the impressive sum of 1 million florins was raised for reconstruction. Now that’s what you call efficiency! Despite being built on land considered unstable, the theatre’s structure has been praised as a remarkable architectural blend. The balance between its two main elements is particularly striking. The lower section, which blends into its surroundings, and the stunning dome that dominates the skyline. Reopened in 1883, this theatre has become a powerful symbol of Czech national identity— and an ideal venue for all performing arts fans!
