The Legend of Saint Hubert

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Prague, A baroque city full of history
Historical, legendary, romantic… Prague can be a thousand things at once. Visitors are in constant awe of its huge artistic treasures and beautiful architecture. You might want to pay extra attention as you stroll through the Czech capital. Otherwise, you may miss out on beautiful details, like the sculpture on this very façade. But who created it? That, I couldn’t tell you… But I do know who it represents. This is a depiction of Saint Hubert. Hubert, a man of no particular faith, couldn’t resist indulging in his lifelong passion—hunting—on Good Friday. Alone in the forest, he found himself chasing a deer. But after some time, the animal suddenly stopped, and he saw a glowing crucifix between its antlers. At that moment, he heard a voice call out: “Hubert! Hubert! How long will you continue to hunt the animals of the forest? How long will this vain passion make you forget the salvation of your soul?” Terrified, the hunter fell to the ground and asked, “Lord! What must I do?” To this, the voice responded: “Go to Lambert, my bishop, in Maastricht. Convert. Repent for your sins, as he will teach you. This is what you must do to avoid eternal damnation.” Hubert obeyed. He left behind his wealth and luxury , and devoted the rest of his days to God. Celebrated on November 3rd in Belgium, his birth country, and on May 30th in other Catholic countries, this Saint is honoured all around the world.
