Saint George’s Basilica

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Prague, A baroque city full of history
You don’t come across religious buildings as colourful as this one very often! Saint George’s Basilica, founded in 920, is one of the oldest preserved places of worship in Prague. The exterior blends Romanesque and Baroque styles. Its two white towers, made of gaize—a stone formed in clay-rich terrain—were only added to the structure in 1142. And would you believe that they each have their own name? The larger of the two is called Adam, while the narrower, slanted one, is called Eve. According to the Bible, this is what the first two humans in the world were called. Once you pay the entrance fee, you can visit the crypt and the Chapel of Our Lady, whose walls miraculously survived a horrible fire. And of course, don’t miss the tomb of Saint Ludmila, one of the most important saints in the Bohemian region.
