Museum Kampa and D.Černý’s babies

Housed in the former Sova water mills, the Museum Kampa is both elegant and simple. Opened in 2003, this museum has been managed by the Mládek couple for years. Driven by their commitment and passion for art, the couple has assembled a collection of masterpieces with the aim of promoting 20th-century Czech culture. Among the works on display, you’ll find creations by major national artists. You’ll be in awe at the abstract art, cubism, and other modern styles here. However, you will need to pay an entrance fee to explore the museum. Before heading to our next stop, take a moment to observe these crawling sculptures on all fours. These eight enormous babies are 2.60 meters tall and 3.50 meters wide. They are the creation of David Černý, a provocative artist, renowned both in his home country and internationally for his intriguing, surrealist sculptures. The work before your eyes is, unsurprisingly, titled The Kampa Babies. You may not understand the point at first, but the artist aimed to criticise our capitalist perception of life and education. Whatever the meaning, one thing is clear: most visitors find this artwork rather intriguing, and even unsettling. Perhaps you feel the same!
