Matthias Gate

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Prague, A baroque city full of history
If you see visitors with their heads tilted back, and cameras in their hands, try following their gaze. They’re pointing you towards one of the must-see attractions on our tour. Connecting the first and second courtyards of Prague Castle, Matthias Gate is considered the oldest Baroque structure in the city. Ressembling a Roman triumphal arch, it was supposedly built around 1614 on the site of ancient fortifications. According to the golden inscription on its pediment, it’s named in honour of Matthias I, a prince of the House of Habsburg who became King of Hungary in 1608, King of Bohemia in 1611, and Holy Roman Emperor in 1612. If you step closer to the gate, you’ll see his emblem and titles carved into the stone. You’ll also find all the territories he ruled represented beneath the cornice you just walked under. Every hour, the castle guards perform a changing of the guard at the courtyard’s exit. If you go at noon, you’ll get to see the grand ceremony take place. Lasting around 20 minutes, this highly coordinated display involves about forty guards rotating shifts to the sound of a solemn fanfare. Check it out during your visit!
