The Stock Exchange Palace

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Porto, A Vintage Soul on the Douro
On your right stands the Stock Exchange Palace. Built in the 19th century, this big neoclassical building replaced the Franciscan convent that had been destroyed by fire. This new one is both imposing and huge, which is no surprise given how influent the Commercial Association of Porto really is. Founded a decade before the Stock Exchange was built, it played an important role in shaping the country’s trade laws. Its commerical code became a national standard, helping boost port wine exports from Porto to Portuguese colonies. So it was only logical for such an institution to have headquarters just as great! Unfortunately, you must pay to enter. If you do choose to visit, know that it’s well worth your time. Not only does it reveal the economical past of the city, but it also showcases several architectural gems, such as the central courtyard covered by a gigantic glass dome and a golden leaf room. Cherry on top, you’ll also find the immense Moorish Hall, reminiscent of the Alhambra in Granada, where official receptions take place in a lavish decor. Facing the palace, you’ll find the Gardens of Prince Henry the Navigator, with his statue holding a globe— a symbol of Portugal’s powerful role in global exploration.
