Saint Lawrence Church

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Porto, A Vintage Soul on the Douro
You’ve arrived at this square and now find yourself face-to-face with the Church of Saint Lawrence, also known as the Church of the Crickets. This nickname has an interesting origin: it was affectionately given to the Spanish monks who later occupied the church, as their nighttime singing reminded locals of crickets’ persistent yet melodious sound. The church was originally built in 1577 by Jesuits in a Mannerist-Baroque style. However, after the Marquis of Pombal expelled the Jesuits, the church changed hands several times before finally being settled by a group of Spanish monks. These Spanish monks gradually won the hearts of local residents, who gave them the affectionate nickname ‘the Crickets.’ The building underwent several renovations and today houses an excellent museum of sacred art, located in what was once the monks’ dormitory. If you’re interested in religious art, do take a look! The liturgical objects displayed here offer fascinating insights into Portugal’s religious and artistic history. We’re now heading to the cathedral, passing by these stairs to the left of the church. Once you reach the top, take a moment to enjoy the view of the church and the city below
