Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Porto, A Vintage Soul on the Douro

Just around the corner, you’ll find this imposing building of a radiant yellow, surrounded by relaxing gardens. Repurposed as the Portuguese Centre of Photography in 1997, these thick walls shelter a darker reality of its past. Starting as a courthouse in the 18th century, it soon transformed into a prison, leaving a permanent mark until 1974. Among the prisoners was none other than Camilo Castelo Branco, a great Portuguese writer of the 19th century. He was imprisoned for adultery, though he must have enjoyed his time here as he wrote one of his most famous novels in only 15 days, known as “Amor de Perdiçao”, or “Love of Perdition” in English. Although the building still retains an austere aspect with thick walls, barred windows and never ending corridors, it’s still a great place possessing a rich heritage dedicated to photography. It counts as one of the best conservation centres for photography in Portugal! So if you’re interested, don’t hesitate to enter. Plus, admission is free! Inside, a blend between prison and photographic history is presented to you. You’ll discover how the former prison was organised, with an array of cells and even torture rooms to see. You’ll also find permanent photograph exhibitions as well as a nice collection of rare and antique cameras. Each month, new temporary exhibitions are introduced to the public to complete the visit, some that you’re not likely to forget!
