The Vieilles boucheries street

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Poitiers, The wonders of Poitou
The Vieux Boucheries street is a fine example of the blend of modern and old architecture typical of Poitiers’ historic centre. It features a number of fine timber-framed houses. As you know, in those days, trades were grouped together by district. This section was inhabited by butchers! Quite astonishing, as they were usually clustered near rivers because of the blood and the smells. Instead, 7 levels of underground cellars were found here, where meat could be stored in a cool place, as well as a blocked well 8 m deep! Which means they did have access to a river, but an underground one! Follow the path around to the left of the building in front of you, to reach the Hôtel Fumé just 2 minutes away.
