Statue of Liberty

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Poitiers, The wonders of Poitou
Can you guess how many replicas there are of the Statue of Liberty? While the exact number is uncertain, It is surely more than you can imagine! From Japan to Argentina, not forgetting Spain, Las Vegas, Rio and Poitiers, many cities have a smaller version of the famous Liberty that lights up the world. Its sculptor, Auguste Bartholdi, made several ever-larger casts before arriving at the final result. A sort of Matryoshka of freedom! Anyway, a version arrived in the square of the same name. And the location was well chosen, because during the Revolution, the square was the site of the pillory and the guillotine! So it’s quite symbolic to see this miniature replica of the Statue of Liberty here today. Now exit the square via Flageolles Street and continue straight on to the Notre Dame covered market.
