As we walk past the Notre Dame covered market, I’d like to take this opportunity to mention a few of the region’s specialities. If you’re visiting on a Saturday, you’re likely to see a large market of local producers. Every week, the market is added to the 28 permanent stalls of the covered market. Now if, like me, you think that the best way to discover a place is through its gastronomy, here are a few dishes you should try straight away! One of the region’s most famous classics is Farci Poitevin, also known as pâté d’herbes. It is made with vegetables such as spinach, chard or cabbage and it is stuffed with meat or bacon, mixed with eggs and breadcrumbs. It is a typical and comforting dish that you will find in many restaurants. For cheese lovers, try Chabichou du Poitou, made from goat’s milk, or tourteau fromager, a cheesecake easily recognisable by its black crust. For a sweet treat, try macarons from Montmorillon, which have nothing to do with the macaroons you know, and nothing to envy them either! Made from almonds and available in a range of flavours, they come from the small neighbouring town of Montmorillon and even have their own museum! Another iconic treat is the broyé du Poitou. It looks like a large crunchy shortbread, and according to tradition, you have to break it by hitting it in the centre. You can visit the market if you like, or the tourist office on the other side of the road, to stock up on all the great deals!
