Jardins de la rivière Bassa

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Perpignan, A Taste of French Catalonia
Much smaller than the Têt — the coastal river that runs through the city of Perpignan — the Basse, named for its low water level, still knows how to make an impression. It’s more than just a quiet little river with peaceful banks. It became the heart of a natural development project aimed at creating a new shaded walking area — without disturbing the animals already living there. To make that happen, the city completely transformed what used to be three hectares of abandoned allotment gardens, originally created for local working-class families to grow their own food. New trees were planted, walking paths and bike lanes were added — all to give the site a fresh new life. The result is a true success: a space where nature and people can coexist in perfect balance.
