Georges Clemenceau square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Pau, From the Bay of Biscay to the Gulf of Lion
The avenue you just walked along, lined with beautiful shops, is the new version of the old Pyrenees Palace, whose roof and dome were removed to turn it into an open, airy, and dynamic shopping street. Now known as Pyrenees Promenade, it’s like a new breeze blowing through the city centre. Strategically located at the end of George Clemenceau Square, it forms a central axis linking the historic and new parts of the town. Several religious buildings originally stood here: a chapel, a cemetery, and Notre-Dame convent founded in 1616. A good number of hotels were built in the early 20th century. In 1908, the Nouvelles Galeries, which later became Galeries Lafayette was constructed. Nowadays, the square is always bustling with activity. In summer, you will find children playing with the water fountains and an ice rink in winter. It’s an ideal meeting place for locals and tourists alike.
