Gassion Hotel

The prestigious Gassion Hotel on your left says a lot about the buildings erected in Pau during the tourist boom. As you can imagine, the hotel was built to accommodate a certain class of tourists and is renowned as being the most modern in Europe. Luxury at its best, it had running water on every floor, as well as a hydraulic lift, and was equipped with an in-house telegraph so that stock market prices could be received every day! And the hotels weren’t the only ones to be equipped with the latest technology! The sumptuous villas built by wealthy foreigners were not to be outdone! Some even had lifts installed to take them up to their two storeys! There are still around a hundred of them today, all in the same district, to the east of Beaumont Park, overlooking the Pyrenees of course!
