Institut du Monde Arabe – Arab World Institute

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Paris, Sorbonne University, Pantheon and Luxembourg Gardens
The massive glass building before you is the Arab World Institute. It’s more than just a museum; it’s a multicultural hub celebrating Arab civilization. Inside, you’ll find world-class permanent exhibitions and a fascinating library. Plus, they organize a host of events throughout the year, from performances and screenings to panel discussions. The institute was founded in the 1980s to improve diplomatic relations between France and the Maghreb countries. The so-called “Arab Beaubourg” was designed by the famous architect Jean Nouvel, who sought to fuse Islamic architecture with Western culture. The façade is made up of 240 mashrabiyas, intricate latticework panels that can be adjusted to control the amount of sunlight entering the building. These allow for natural ventilation and help regulate the temperature inside. They’re often found in Arab palaces, where they protect women from prying eyes. You can also head to the top floor for a breathtaking view of Paris. The terrace offers an unbeatable vista of the city’s historic landmarks and it’s all for free. Want to further explore this different culture? Head over to the Grand Mosque of Paris, just a kilometer away. It’s right opposite the Botanical Garden. It was built in the early 20th century in a beautiful Hispano-Moorish style, and is instantly recognizable by its 33-metre-high minaret. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful patio inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Granada, as well as a hammam, a restaurant, a tea room and a boutique.
