If you walk a few meters down the path on your right, you’ll soon arrive at Marcel Proust’s tomb. A French writer, critic, and essayist who inspired countless readers to immerse themselves in the world of literature. His body of work is considered amongst the greatest cultural treasures of France.Widely regarded as the master of modern novel, his most famous work is a seven-volume series titled “In Search of Lost Time”. In 1907, he began writing the first volume, Swann’s Way. Surprisingly, it was rejected by several publishers, and he ended up publishing it at his own expense in 1913. In 1919, he published the second volume, In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower. Thankfully, it was a great success, going so far as winning the Prix Goncourt, one of the most prestigious prizes in French literature. Five more volumes were published to complete the series, some after his death. Proust died in 1922 at the age of 51, from untreated bronchitis and a lifetime of severe asthma. Through his vast novel of over 200 characters, Marcel Proust explored the profound themes of memory, time, love, and the emptiness of existence. His unique writing style including long and detailed sentences captured his characters, the settings, and the clothing perfectly; making him one of the most celebrated French authors in the world. Fittingly, he now rests here, in the country’s most famous cemetery.
