Did you know that France’s overseas territories are home to nearly 80% of the country’s biodiversity? These stunning islands have also given rise to artists, philosophers, and athletes who have shaped French culture. To your right lies Henri Salvador. Born in French Guiana, he was a man of many talents – singer, composer, performer, writer, and comedian! He would grow up to be one of the finest jazz musicians of the 20th century. At the age of 12, he left French Guiana and moved to Paris. His parents wanted him to become a doctor, but Henri had other dreams and often skipped school. Inspired by jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington , he dreamed of becoming a musician, so he began learning the guitar. Henri and his brother André longed to play in an orchestra, but in the 1940s, this was no easy path for two young men from the French Caribbean. Still, Henri persevered and his hard work paid off when his talent was spotted by Ray Ventura, a French jazz pianist, who took him on tour in Brazil. This was the start of Salvador’s music career, a man known for his signature laugh, comedic flair, and several timeless songs loved by France and beyond, including Jardin d’Hiver and Une chanson douce.
If you are keen, further down, you’ll find the grave of Christian Pineau – a trade unionist, a fighter in the French Resistance, and a man who helped rebuild France after World War II. He worked towards peace between France and Germany, shaping the Europe we know today.
