Here lies Georges Courteline — born Georges Moinaux — a French writer and playwright from the city of Tours. In a world tangled in bureaucracy, power, and greed, he held up a mirror. His writings reflected back characters so absurd, but so real. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, his satirical comedies exposed the absurd human behaviour in French society through his sharp and clever wit. His ironic style was a fine line between caricature and humour, shown clearly in his most famous work: Messieurs les ronds-de-cuir, or the Bureaucrats, published in 1893. His characters revealed how dull and unproductive public administration can be, through grotesque dialogue and exaggerated roles. In 1926, Courteline was elected to the Académie Goncourt, an elite literary organisation in Paris, and received the prestigious Montyon Prize for his work. Since then, he has remained one of the greats in social satire. If you turn right onto Avenue Aguado, you’ll find a memorial for those who died for France in North Africa from 1952 to 1962. It honours the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country during the Algerian War. It was a long, painful conflict. Nearly 3 million soldiers were called to the front, with 30,000 killed and 300,000 wounded. The monument was inaugurated on February 3rd, 2003. Bertrand Delanoë, the mayor of Paris at the time, laid its first stone—marking the 40th anniversary of the war’s ceasefire. The memory of these soldiers will live on forever.
