As you walk along Avenue Eugène Delacroix, you’ll see this renowned French painter’s grave on your right. His works have inspired countless artists and history books have certainly not forgotten about him. He created one of the most studied and admired paintings in all of French art. Even if you’ve never studied French art before, you ’ve probably seen the painting we’re referring to. It is Delacroix’s greatest work – Liberty Leading the People, completed in 1830. It depicts the July Revolution of 1830 that toppled King Charles X, with a bare-breasted Marianne brandishing what would become the french flag accompanied by a boy brandishing a pistol. They lead a group over a barricade and dead bodies. Much like Marianne, the symbolic figure of the French Republic, Eugène Delacroix is seen by many as the leading figure of the Romantic movement. This artistic movement paved the way for French modern art in the 20th century. His beautiful brushstrokes, full of emotion, blend the exotic with the sublime. Even those uninterested in art can’t deny the feeling they get seeing his work, allowing Delacroix to remain one of the most iconic figures in French art. Let’s continue walking down the path.
