The city’s parks and gardens

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Paris, On the Champs Elysées
You’re now strolling through the gardens at the foot of the Champs Élysées. They’re not nearly as famous as the luxury boutiques here, but they’re well worth the detour, especially if you’re looking to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. What was once marshland in the early 1800s was eventually transformed into English landscape gardens in 1840. The gardens are divided into several squares. You’ll find the Ambassadors’ Square, home to the Espace Cardin with its theater, cinema, and art gallery. Then there’s the Roundabout Square and the Marigny Square, both known for their namesake theaters. Finally, there’s Ledoyen Square, where you are now. Across the Place de la Concorde, you’ll see the entrance to the Tuileries Gardens. This historic park once housed the Tuileries Palace, which was built by Catherine de Medici in 1564 on the site of a former tile factory, hence its name! As for the French formal garden, it was designed by André Le Nôtre. Here, you’ll find numerous statues by Maillol, Rodin and Giacometti. This is also where you’ll find the Orangerie Museum, showcasing works by Monet. This 23-hectare park was Paris’s first public garden and hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from the Christmas market and the ice rink in winter to the Tuileries festival in summer. There’s always something exciting going on here!
