Palermo Cathedral

02 cathedrale de palerme poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Palermo, Where Sicily’s Soul Comes Alive

Whichever city you’re in, you’re likely to come across a cathedral, but Palermo’s stands out from the crowd, just a short walk from Via Matteo Bonello. With its striking Arab-Norman architecture, Palermo Cathedral is  unlike any other on the island.

The stunning cathedral was built in 1185 on the site of a former Byzantine basilica, on the initiative of an Anglo-Norman archbishop who was also Prime Minister to the King of Sicily at the time. His name was Gualtiero Offamilio, better known locally as Offamilio, Archbishop of Palermo. In the 9th century, the site was transformed into a mosque during the Muslim conquest of the region. Today, it’s a mighty, fortress-like cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Though it has undergone several restorations over more than eight centuries, Palermo Cathedral still retains a unique Arab-Norman character.

This rare architectural blend earned it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015. It remains a place of worship and reflection, but it’s also a royal burial site. Inside, you’ll find the resting place of King Roger II, the first King of Sicily, as well as Emperor Frederick II, one of the most influential figures in European history, and Santa Rosalia, Palermo’s beloved patron saint.
