Il Capo District
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Palermo, Where Sicily’s Soul Comes Alive
It’s hard to explore Palermo without stepping into Il Capo, one of the city’s liveliest and most picturesque neighborhoods. Built on the old bed of the Papireto River, later filled in, the area grew around its market, active since the 17th century and still one of the most popular in town.
A walk through the Capo market feels like stepping into a souk: narrow alleys, colorful stalls, the smell of fresh fish, spices and fruit, and vendors shouting out their prices to attract passers-by. It’s the perfect way to soak up the southern Italian atmosphere! But Il Capo is more than just its market. The neighborhood is also home to baroque gems like the church of the Immaculate Conception, a masterpiece of polychrome marble decoration.
Just nearby, the Cathedral dominates the south-west, while to the north-east the Teatro Massimo, with its Liberty-style kiosks, adds an elegant and welcoming touch. Between market life, heritage, and everyday conviviality, Il Capo is Palermo in its most authentic form.
