Church of the Gesù

21 la chiesa del gesu palerme poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Palermo, Where Sicily’s Soul Comes Alive

The Chiesa del Gesù was the first place of worship built by the Jesuit Catholic congregation in Palermo, back in 1564. Severely damaged during the Second World War, the church underwent several major restorations before it could welcome worshippers once again. Widely considered the most significant example of Baroque art in Palermo, the church has been part of Sicily’s artistic heritage since 1892.

While the exterior may seem plain at first, just wait until you step inside. Prepare yourself for a visual feast of arabesques and elaborate decorations, with white and multicoloured marble covering every surface. The richly adorned dome, transept, and apses perfectly capture the dramatic flair of the Baroque style. In short, get ready to be amazed. As you move through the church, you’ll notice it’s laid out with three naves. Within them, marble inlays, frescoes, sculptures, and finely crafted details compete for your attention.

Don’t miss the main chapel, with its stunning apse gallery and marble bas-reliefs. You can also step into the Chapel of Saint Anne, where the altar features a beautiful painting of the Virgin Mary.
