Church of St. Mary of the Admiral

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Palermo, Where Sicily’s Soul Comes Alive

The Chiesa della Martorana, also known as Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, is unlike any other church in Palermo. Rooted in the Greek-Byzantine tradition, it’s one of the city’s most dazzling and unique treasures. Built in the 12th century by George of Antioch, a Syrian admiral, the church was designed in a cross-in-square layout, allowing the faithful to pray facing east. It underwent some renovations in the 16th century, but these changes did nothing to take away from its charm, or its extraordinary interior.

From the outside, you can still admire its Arab-Norman architecture and the beautiful open bell tower. Inside, you’ll be greeted by soaring vaults and arches covered in some of the world’s most beautiful and intricate mosaics. As for the name “Martorana,” some believe it’s connected to the little marzipan treats once made by the Benedictine nuns of the nearby Martorana convent. You can still find these colourful sweets today in pastry shops and markets across Palermo.

But back to the church itself. We’ve described its beauty, but what about its spiritual role? This isn’t your typical Catholic church. It originally served as a key place of worship for the Albanian community of Sicily, a Greek-Byzantine rite community of about 15,000 faithful.A masterpiece of culture, faith, and craftsmanship, the Chiesa della Martorana captivates all who enter.
