The Albergheria District
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Palermo, Where Sicily’s Soul Comes Alive
A real favourite among visitors, Albergheria is probably the oldest neighbourhood in Palermo. It was born on land once rich in water, crossed by the ancient Kemonia river, and over the centuries it became the seat of power for different rulers. According to tradition, the name comes from the people of Centurbi and Capacii, who were relocated here in the 13th century after defying Emperor Frederick II, then King of Sicily.
The district became known as an ‘Albergaria,’ a medieval term for a place of lodging and hospitality, which in this case was used to house the displaced communities. Today, Albergheria remains the beating heart of the city, home to iconic monuments and the lively Ballarò market.
This market is a true institution, loved for its buzzing atmosphere and the irresistible aromas of fresh produce, colourful fruits, and local street food. Among the quarter’s highlights is the Martorana Church, which we mentioned earlier. To sum up, Albergheria is a warm, vibrant district that brings together some of Palermo’s most beautiful treasures.
