Covered Market

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Oxford, The city of the dreaming spires
Every visit of a city is incomplete without exploring its gastronomy and local products. Here you have Oxford’s Covered Market, a permanent indoor market. It dates back to 1774 and was opened two years after the existing market committee received a significant amount of money to build 20 butchers’ shops. From then on, it was forbidden to sell meat outside the market. John Gwynn, the architect of Magdalen Bridge, designed the plans and the facade on High Street. About twenty other shops quickly emerged, and from there, the market has continued to thrive until today. It houses numerous stalls offering a wide variety of products: fresh fruits, vegetables, breads and cakes, charcuterie, cheeses, delicatessen, flowers, as well as leather goods, shoes, watches and jewelry, clothing, gifts, hats, and much more. It’s a charming and typical place, ideal for discovering the local products of the region and the talent of its artisans! Not to mention the countless cafes where you can enjoy a well-deserved gourmet break.
