Supreme Court of Canada

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Ottawa, Setting course for Canada’s capital
Here you are in front of another of the country’s most important buildings: the Supreme Court of Canada. As a symbol of Canada’s judicial authority, it is the highest legal authority for civil, criminal, administrative, and constitutional decisions. The Supreme Court is composed of nine judges, who are appointed by the Governor General on recommendation of the Prime Minister. They work here until the age of 75, unless they choose to retire earlier. The Court was established in 1875 following the creation of the Confederation, but the building in front of you was not constructed until 1940. Designed by Ernest Cormier, it blends both Château-style and Art Deco architecture. On either side of the façade, you’ll find two statues: Veritas (Truth) and Justitia (Justice). These sculptures were made by Walter Seymour Allward, one of Canada’s most famous sculptors of the 20th century. With its striking architecture and historical significance, the Supreme Court is one of the most beautiful buildings in the capital, perfectly complementing the institutions on Parliament Hill.
