Senate of Canada Building

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Ottawa, Setting course for Canada’s capital
Despite its name, this impressive building is not the Senate’s permanent home. Usually, the Senate meets up in the Centre Block of Parliament, alongside the House of Commons. However, since there are currently renovations on the main building, the Senate is temporarily housed here. Once the work is complete, it will return to its original chamber. When the building opened in 1912, it first served as Ottawa’s central train station—Union Station. Then from 1966 until 2018, it became the Government Conference Centre. It was recently renovated to accommodate the Senate during the Centre Block’s restoration, then was officially renamed the Senate Building for the time being. Its architecture showcases a beautiful Beaux-Arts style, designed by New York architect Bradford Lee Gilbert.
