Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Ottawa, Setting course for Canada’s capital

Take a look to your left. Do you see the beautiful church with its light-green spire? It belongs to Ottawa’s first Baptist congregation. The Baptist denomination is an evangelical Christian movement founded by the English in the 17th century, counting over 170 million members today. The Ottawa Baptist Church was founded in 1857, but it wasn’t until 1878 that this building came into function, making it the very first Baptist church in downtown Ottawa. Architect James Mather took care of its construction. The Prime Minister at the time, Alexander Mackenzie, often came to the church to pray, and even planted the foundation stone himself. The church was extended in 1916 and renovated in 1928. A massive pipe organ was added in 1967 to celebrate the Canadian Centennial. With its exceptional spire, it easily stands out from all the other modern buildings in the area, thanks to its architecture and history. A testimony to Ottawa’s past, it has been standing here for over 150 years now. It is listed as a historical building since 1985.
