Here’s the famous Domkirke, which is also known as Oslo Cathedral or the Church of Our Savior. It may not be the most jaw-dropping cathedral you’ve ever seen, but it has a few standout features that make it unique. This is the seat of the Lutheran diocese of Oslo and of the Church of Norway. Around 85% of Norwegians belong to the Lutheran Church, which has been the dominant religion since King Christian III of Denmark imposed it as the official faith in 1534. At that time, the crown confiscated Catholic Church property, and many churches were abandoned or destroyed. This move also merged Church and State, with the king becoming the head of the Church of Norway. That union lasted until 2012, when the Norwegian parliament ended the idea of a state religion. In reality, religion here has always been cultural, and Norwegians aren’t regular churchgoers. Anyway, back to the cathedral. It was built in the 17th century in an austere baroque style. That said, be sure to step inside since entry is free. Don’t forget to look up, the painted ceiling vaults are stunning. The interior hashas preserved several historical elements, including the pulpit, altar, and organ case. The stained-glass windows were made by Emanuel Vigeland, younger brother of Gustav, the mastermind behind the incredible sculpture park that’s now one of Oslo’s top attractions. Just outside, the churchyard is the final resting place of several important figures you’re welcome to pay your respects to. Finally, this is the very cathedral the royal family uses for their public ceremonies.
