Mounet brothers’ square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Orange, The City of Princes
The beautiful Mounet brothers’ square invites you to soak up the sunshine on one of its terraces. It’s named after Jean and Paul Mounet, two brothers born in Bergerac in the 1840s, who became eminent French comedians of their day. Jean, the more famous of the two, is considered the greatest tragedian of his time, notably for his performances in Otello and Hamlet. His younger brother, though a little less illustrious, was also a great actor. The city of Orange therefore wished to honor the artistic legacy left by these two men and commemorate their contribution to the dramatic arts, by giving their name to the square right in front of the ancient theatre. Opposite the Theatre’s royal gate, you can see a statue by the sculptor Injalbert. It shows the ancient soul handing over the torch of Art to modern people. It stands here since 1899, as the centerpiece of this square dedicated to culture. I’ll leave you to soak up the warmth of this lovely central square, before continuing our tour.
