Town Hall

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome
You are standing in front of the Town Hall of Nîmes. Initially, this building housed the Royal Treasury. It was constructed in the 14th century. In the next street on the right, that is on Treasury street, you can still see the remains of this outstanding monument. It was at the very beginning of the 18th century that it became the Town Hall, after an expansion by local architect Jacques Cubizol. Four stuffed crocodiles hang above the staircase in the building. Remember, the crocodile is one of the city’s emblems. The motto of the city is Ne Quid Nimis, which is Latin for Nothing in Exces. The building stands out on Town Hall Square, one of the most famous squares in Nîmes.
