Temple of Diana

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome
You can’t miss this Roman remnant, located in the heart of the Fountain Gardens! Even though it’s not as well preserved as the arena or the Square House, we have to agree that it’s still standing! Although we don’t know exactly what this monument, known as the Temple of Diana, was used for, we do know that it was part of a large sanctuary dedicated to Augustus, the Roman emperor, and that it dates back to the 1st century BC. It became an abbey in 991, before being partly destroyed by a fire in the 16th century. When the garden was laid out, it was requested that the temple – or at least the ruins of the temple – be left in its original state, to add even more elegance to the park. However, the history of this monument is still far from being fully known!
