Saint-Baudile Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome
Built between 1867 and 1877, the magnificent Saint-Baudile church is far from being the oldest monument in Nîmes. Nevertheless, it remains a magnificent example of neo-Gothic architecture, and was designed by architect Jules Mondet of Bordeaux. The 70 metre high church, dedicated to Saint-Baudile, rises above the town with its two impressive spires reaching for the sky. For those lucky enough to have visited Bordeaux, this sober, elegant church, with its rose window above the porch, will certainly remind you of the Sacré-Coeur church in Bordeaux! Indeed, the same architect designed these two churches. If you visit the interior, you’ll find beautiful mosaics, a sumptuous organ and magnificent stained glass windows designed by Joseph Villiet of the Bordeaux Academy. At the top of the façade is a statue of Saint Baudile, bearing the sword and palm of martyrdom, a sign worn by saints who suffered cruelly for defending their religious faith.
