Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome
You are standing before the Nîmes Romanesque House, at no. 1 Madeleine Street. Built in the twelfth century as a single-storey Romanesque house, more storeys were subsiquently added in the fourteenth century and fifteenth century to make it the house it is today. If you raise your gaze, you will notice its decorations. It features several friezes representing plant motifs, acanthus leaves, animals, human faces, as well as the heads of monsters. Take your time to observe these sculptures, which are very typical of Romanesque architecture. Although the exact owner of the building is unknown, it could have been a hotel or the home of a wealthy resident of Nîmes. What we do know is that it is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the city, dating straight back to the Middle Ages. Its age and typical Romanesque architecture make it one of the city’s listed historic monuments!
