Food lovers, this is the place to be! The Nîmes Covered Market feature around one hundred stalls full of local produce. This ultra-modern building, remodelled by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, nicknamed ‘the architect of the future’, has a warm and friendly atmosphere that you can sense even before you enter the covered market. In fact, it’s been around for almost a century and a half! Now, let’s see what you can expect to find in these covered markets! Nîmes is a city at the crossroads of Provence, Camargue and Cévennes. This ideal location steeped in sunshine and flavours, ensures a rich and diverse gastronomy. Some of the region’s best known specialities include Camargue bull stew, a meat dish simmered in red wine that comes straight from Camargue, as does the rice that accompanies it. Cod brandade is the city’s signature dish, served hot or cold, as is the petit pâté nîmois, a puff pastry stuffed with minced pork and veal. You’ll also come across all the delightful Provençal flavours, including olive oil and the famous tapenade, to enjoy as an aperitif. Delicatessen and goat cheese, known as Pélardon, are also reminders of the town’s proximity to the Cévennes. Although they are produced there, you can easily find them in Nîmes. When it comes to desserts, don’t leave without trying Villaret, a crunchy, long, golden, dry biscuit made with honey, almonds, orange blossom and lemon, or the more tender caladon, made with whole almonds and honey. To wash it all down, try a glass of wine, or even a Perrier, as the source of this famous fizzy drink is only a few kilometres from Nîmes!
