Market Square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome
Quite a charming square, don’t you think? Look out for the palm tree in the centre: it’s one of the two landmarks of the city of Nîmes! The second is a little further from the square, which was once home to a large covered market. At the end of the square, you’ll come across a charming fountain featuring a terrifying crocodile which, you may notice, is no longer attached… In fact, the emblem of Nîmes shows a crocodile chained to a palm tree, representing Egypt’s submission to Rome when the future emperor Augustus defeated Antony and Cleopatra. But watch out… It seems that its chain has broken… Nowadays, the square is adorned with large terraces of bars and restaurants, strategically located just a few metres from the arena, attracting a large number of food lovers!
