Horloge Square

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome
Welcome to Horloge Square. Here, you can see the 31 metre-high Horloge Tower overlooking over the square. Although it was built in the 18th century, there was already a 15th-century belfry here before that. As its name suggests, the square features a dial telling the time, and a wrought-iron bell hanging from the top. Like in several other towns, it was the inhabitants themselves who demanded a clock tower, so that they could keep track of time throughout the day. In 1410, the king authorised the construction of a belfry. The building we see today was built between 1752 and 1754, in the centre of Horloge Square, one of the liveliest in the city. Feel free to take a stroll around the square, where you’ll find bars, restaurants and shops where you can indulge in an impromptu shopping spree.
