Grand Dominican Temple

03 grand temple des dominicains poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome

This is the Grand Dominicain Temple. Built between 1714 and 1736, it belonged to the Catholic religious Order of Preachers, founded in 1215. Following the French Revolution, religious orders were abolished in 1792 and as a result Dominicans had to disband while the church became the property of the State. The Protestants bought it and gave it the status of a Grand Temple. They built an organ in 1821. The building was remodelled during the 19th century, but still displays the sober, solemn style typical of Protestant temples of the Languedoc region. It features an attractive Baroque façade. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1964. Since then, it has been protected from destruction and regularly restored to keep it in perfect condition. Unfortunately, it is not open to visitors except on European Heritage Days, but its exterior is already a fine example of a Dominican temple.
