Chapel of the Jesuits

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nîmes, The French Rome
Welcome to the Chapel of the Jesuits, built at the end of the 17th century. Founded in 1540 by Ignatius of Loyola, the Society of Jesus is one of the most important religious orders in the church, and they are renowned for having founded numerous colleges around the world. The building you see before you was the chapel of the Jesuit college in Nîmes. In 1762, the Jesuits were expelled from France, and in 1773, the Society of Jesus was dissolved by the Pope. The college was then closed and the chapel later became the municipal library. In 1973, it was listed as a Historic Monument and was completely renovated in 1980. This sumptuous building is no longer dedicated to religious worship, but belongs to the museum, and hosts exhibitions and concerts in its superb hall, decorated in a style reminiscent of the Roman monuments in the city.
