Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nice, Nissa la Bella
The commemorative monument that you see here is the “centenary monument”. You can see 2 women at the base of the pyramid. They are both allegories of Nice surrendering itself to France. Take a closer look to France. She is not wearing her typical red hat, and isn’t bare-breasted. She is rather calm and symbolizes the desire for a moderate republic. At the top is a Nike, a Victory, it recalls directly to the greek name of Nice, Nikaia. It means “she through whom victory arrives”. Do look at the date marked here,1860, it marks the year of the final annexation of Nice to France, but you can also find the year 1793. Indeed, in 1860 it wasn’t the first time that Nice had been attached to France but the second. The first time it was returned to the House of Savoy in 1814 before being renegotiated by Napoleon III in 1860! So, in 1893, we commemorated the centenary of Nice’s first attachment to France.
