Chinatown

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, The Towers of Wall Street
As you’ll have gathered from all the colors, smells and little signs decorating the stores, you’ve arrived in Chinatown! This neighborhood was established in the 1850s, following the arrival of a large number of Chinese immigrants. It grew rapidly, and by 1882, just 32 years later, it was home to 2,000 residents of Chinese origin. They were faced with racism and had to band together in this very neighborhood to protect themselves and assert their rights. This was made possible thanks to the associations set up by certain influential Chinese people who helped newcomers find jobs and access financial support. Today, Chinatown has its own central organization that works with the city to support new arrivals. This exotic neighborhood is a real immersion in Asian culture, with over 200 restaurants serving Chinese specialties that are sure to please even the pickiest eaters. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss! Fun fact: There’s a second Chinatown in Queens, which popped up later as more Asian people came to live in NYC.
