This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, The Towers of Wall Street

The Bull of Wall Street, also known as the Charging Bull, is an iconic sight in the Financial District. It was illegally installed in front of the New York Stock Exchange following the 1987 Stock Market Crash, but was eventually embraced by the city in 1989. It now stands at the northern end of Bowling Green Park, just a stone’s throw from Broadway. Designed by Italian sculptor Arturo Di Modica, who also funded the construction, this sculpture was meant to reflect the power of the city’s financial markets. It was Di Modica who illegally erected the sculpture here as an expression of the strength of the American people; as you can see, it shows an aggressive bull, ready to strike. The sculpture was a huge hit with New Yorkers and visitors from all over the world, and was ultimately kept here, in the heart of the Financial District. Today, it remains one of the most photographed works of art in the city, which has a population of over 8 million!
