Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit New York, In the heart of Manhattan

Hope you’re not overwhelmed by all the dazzling lights, ’cause we’re about to take a look at the history of Times Square. Before becoming the huge attraction it is today, this was just a simple square called Longacre Square. It only took the name Times Square in 1904, when the New York Times moved its headquarters here. It quickly became a cultural hub filled with theaters, concert halls and boutiques, making it a favorite haunt of New Yorkers. Things took a turn for the worse in the 19th century, however, when the community fell on hard times. Times Square became a hotbed of criminal activity and drug use, and remained so until the 1990s. At the time, it was even referred to as the “Thieves’ Lair”! It wasn’t until the 1990s, following an urban renewal project, that Times Square was restored to its former glory. Then came the first giant digital billboards, replacing the paper posters that once hung on buildings. The very first one was set up by Sony, and in 2014, the world’s biggest screen was installed, joining the hundred or so others already in place. Today, Times Square is undoubtedly the reason why New York is nicknamed the “City that never sleeps”! It’s truly one-of-a-kind, capturing the very essence of this cosmopolitan destination!
