The High Line

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, In the heart of Manhattan
Have you ever heard of New York’s High Line? You get to see the city in a whole new way. Plus, it’s just a few blocks to your left, always in the Chelsea district. This elevated park is a must-see when visiting the biggest city in the US. Rising above the neighborhood’s streets, the High Line was built on the site of the old railroad that had stood there since the 1930s. It was used to transport goods into this part of Manhattan, helping with traffic congestion below. Some thirty years later, however, as freeways made it easier for trucks to transport goods, the railroad fell into disuse. By 1980, it was no longer used at all. It was thanks to local residents Joshua David and Robert Hammond that the abandoned line was transformed, inspired by the Coulée Verte in Paris. Thus was born this stunning 2.3-kilometer-long park, stretching from the Meatpacking District a little further south to the Rail Yards area north of Chelsea. If you get the chance to stroll through it, remember to keep your eyes peeled and look for the frescoes adorning some of the buildings along the way! It’s a fantastic place for a leisurely stroll. Don’t miss it!
