Behold! New York’s famous Flatiron building, standing just a stone’s throw from Madison Square Park. It only took two years to build and was one of Manhattan’s tallest skyscrapers at its inauguration in 1902. It sports a steel structure in the Beaux-Arts style chosen by its designer, American architect Daniel Burnham, who also designed the Chicago and Manila skyscrapers. It’s one of the very first skyscrapers built in New York, and certainly one of the most distinctive, recognizable all over the world! Its unique look is due to its location, wedged between 5th Avenue and Broadway. As it happens, Broadway is the only avenue in Manhattan that doesn’t follow the grid plan laid down in 1811, and crosses part of the island diagonally, hence the building’s triangular shape, with a tip that’s just 2 meters wide! With 22 storeys and a height of 87 meters, the Flatiron Building is far from impressive when compared with modern skyscrapers, yet it remains an iconic New York landmark. It impresses with its unique shape and has been featured in a number of internationally acclaimed films, such as “Spider-Man” and “Godzilla.” It also once housed the headquarters of The New York Times, the famous newspaper. Today, the building is home to a number of business offices and, unlike the Empire State Building, you can’t go up to the top for a view of New York. It’s a must-see nonetheless!
