Broadway

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, In the heart of Manhattan
We all know Broadway as the birthplace of musicals, theater, and shows of all kinds, but did you know that Broadway is actually the name of New York’s oldest and longest avenue? Plus, it’s also the only avenue in Manhattan that doesn’t follow the strict city grid pattern, diagonally crossing the island! The name of this mythical avenue comes from the Dutch term “brede weg,” meaning “wide avenue,” and was translated into English when the British reclaimed the city. Today, it’s New York’s most famous street, used as far back as pre-Columbian times by the Lenape people.
