This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, Destination: Brooklyn

From here, you have a fantastic view of the Manhattan Bridge. While not as famous as its neighbor, the Brooklyn Bridge, it’s no less impressive for its history and architecture. It was the last bridge to be built between Manhattan and Brooklyn, as both Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge had already been built by then. It was inaugurated in 1912 after a decade of construction, due to delays caused by a fire in 1909. It was originally to be called Bridge No. 3, but eventually became known as the Manhattan Bridge. A bit classier, don’t you think? It has a distinctive blue color and is over 2 km long, surpassing the Brooklyn Bridge. Its innovative design was, in fact, the inspiration for other famous bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Its pylons are 102 meters high and its platform rises 41 meters above the East River, offering magnificent views of its neighbor, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Thousands of vehicles cross it every day! Add to this the commuters crossing it via the subway and the tourists strolling across on foot…and, well, it’s no wonder this bridge is one of the busiest places in New York!
